Reflections on Advent

In keeping with the random theme of this blog, I have decided to post some of my personal reflections on the coming season of Advent.

This Sunday, the 30th of November, is the First Sunday of Advent, and marks the start of a new Catholic Liturgical Year.

Advent is derived from the Latin "Adventus", which means "coming" or "arrival". Advent is a season when Catholics are encouraged to prepare themselves for Christmas, when we celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Christ. Advent is also a time for Catholics to reflect on our own lives and how prepared are we for the Second Coming of Christ, of which we know not the hour.

As I prepare to enter the season of Advent, I am once again wrestling with various doubts and questions about my life and my own faith. What does Jesus Christ really mean to me? Does the miracle of the Incarnation and Birth of Christ really matter to me? Have I lived my life like how a Christian should, or have I become lost along the way, blinded by my pride and my ambition?

As part of my preparation for Christmas, I will try to reflect more deeply on the Gospel Readings for the Advent Sundays. The reading for the first Sunday of Advent is taken from Mark 13:33-37. The reading uses the analogy of a master who has gone away on a journey and left his servants in charge of the house to exhort Christians to be watchful and always prepared, for we know not the hour when the master shall return. "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back" " If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping" Far too often in my life, I have fallen asleep. Far too often, especially of late, I have neglected my duties to God and neighbour. This Gospel reading is indeed a timely wake up call for me, to strive to improve myself and my life so that when the master returns, he shall find me prepared to welcome him.

I shall end this post with a verse from a German Advent Hymn:

"Wir sagen euch an den lieben Advent.
Sehet die erste Kerze Brennt.
Wir sagen euch an eine heilige Zeit.
Machet dem Herrn die Wege bereit"

married to bukit tinggi.

The top 6 oh-so-hella-fun-i-almost-wet-myself-in front-of-ah-sheong's-awesomely-cool-papa highlights of our (ah sheong, chesta + pikkei) Bukit Tinggi trip:

(not in chronological/ranking order)

1. catching insects in the semi-virgin forest botanical garden of bukit tinggi. the paths were so slippery, chesta n i almost slipped and rolled off the hill. we named one moth we caught 'Meyonce'. erm, cos it looked lik the local diva of the garden. the other moth that looked slutty, we named it 'Tritney Mears'.

2. going to random, secluded places of bukit tinggi. i was half-expecting to find a random couple making love in the midst of those 7 feet giant lalangs. the wild orchids that lined the road was BEAUTIFUL.

3. random camwhorin sessions, especially at the stagnantly borring japanese garden n the faux french village. (wtf guys, we look lik HOMELESS KIDS in all the pics. swt.) as gay and jolly as it was, we lost to that old mat salleh camwhorin wif his two paid-by-the hours manwhores. (chesta i noticed, they wore uniforms??)

4. sunbathing by the pool. and stoning there for 2 hrs... (while pikkei was complaining about kids swimming in transparent undies.)

5. the nuggets + hot dogs + coco crunch (damn random leh pikkei) picnic at the top of bukit tinggi. the view of the karak highway at 3500 feet above sea level was almost enuf to make me wanna quit form 6.

6. popping my i-hv-nvr-stood-on-the-back-of-a-speeding-lorry-with-my-so-hai-
friends-while-trying-not-to-get-flung-outta-the-lorry-everytime-
it-beloks cherry. the part where we all sang 'i kissed a girl' and 'hot & cold' at 60 mph throughout bukit tinggi was a bonus. so was the part when ppl gave us the 'sampah masyarkat/no future' stare.

A Short Social Commentary

Since I am short of ideas as to what to post, I decided to post this short social commentary I wrote a few weeks ago while applying for something. Like I said, our blog does not have a set theme, so I may post more social commentaries in future if I write them. Happy reading and please feel free to leave comments.

There are various challenges facing my homeland, Malaysia. The one that I believe to be the greatest though, is the deteriorating state of race relations in my country.

Malaysia is a multiracial country and multi-religious country and has been an independent nation for 51 years. However, racial relations have never been worse than they are now. The roots of the problem can be traced back to the colonial era. However, over the past 51 years until today, the ruling government cynically exploited the existing divisions in Malaysian society to maintain their grip on power. Racist and misguided policies further polarized Malaysian society and resulted in greater inter-ethnic mistrust and discontent.

There are however steps that can be taken to improve the situation. As future leaders of society, the youth can play an important role in this process. Malaysians, especially the youth must truly embrace multiculturalism and reject racialism. One way is by rejecting race based political parties at the ballot boxes. Young people must also learn to interact and connect with people from all backgrounds. Through social activism and participation in the media, especially new media like blogging, the youth can help pressure society to put aside old prejudices and develop a new society that is built on trust and mutual respect.

It is clear that racial tension is the gravest threat to Malaysia. Hence, it is imperative that all Malaysians unite and strive to create a truly united Malaysian nation. Only then can Malaysia achieve the greatness it has always aspired to.

Our First Post

Seeing as how most of my classmates already have blogs, DSV and I decided that we should start one too. Two other friends will be joining us in time to come.

Anyway, we decided on the address mutuallyrandom.blogspot for our blog. We felt that it would be a very apt description of our blog as all four of us have our own writing styles and the blog will probably end up quite random as we will not have a set theme for our blog. All of us also have our own reasons for blogging. For me, I view blogging as a chance to practise my writing skills. It is also hopefully an opportunity for me to connect better with my classmates and schoolmates.

Well, if anyone out there is interested in gaining new insights about four random guys from SMK Bandar Utama's Sixth Form Science Class, then just come read our blog. Feel free to leave comments. Happy reading!
