A Short Social Commentary

Since I am short of ideas as to what to post, I decided to post this short social commentary I wrote a few weeks ago while applying for something. Like I said, our blog does not have a set theme, so I may post more social commentaries in future if I write them. Happy reading and please feel free to leave comments.

There are various challenges facing my homeland, Malaysia. The one that I believe to be the greatest though, is the deteriorating state of race relations in my country.

Malaysia is a multiracial country and multi-religious country and has been an independent nation for 51 years. However, racial relations have never been worse than they are now. The roots of the problem can be traced back to the colonial era. However, over the past 51 years until today, the ruling government cynically exploited the existing divisions in Malaysian society to maintain their grip on power. Racist and misguided policies further polarized Malaysian society and resulted in greater inter-ethnic mistrust and discontent.

There are however steps that can be taken to improve the situation. As future leaders of society, the youth can play an important role in this process. Malaysians, especially the youth must truly embrace multiculturalism and reject racialism. One way is by rejecting race based political parties at the ballot boxes. Young people must also learn to interact and connect with people from all backgrounds. Through social activism and participation in the media, especially new media like blogging, the youth can help pressure society to put aside old prejudices and develop a new society that is built on trust and mutual respect.

It is clear that racial tension is the gravest threat to Malaysia. Hence, it is imperative that all Malaysians unite and strive to create a truly united Malaysian nation. Only then can Malaysia achieve the greatness it has always aspired to.
